Shipping’s Big 3 have Big Year

The fourth place in terms of fleet capacity was claimed by Hapag-Lloyd / CSAV, who recently merged, followed by Taiwanese liner Evergreen in fifth place

Maersk, CMA CGM and MSC have claimed the top three spots regarding the highest increase in fleet capacity in the shipping sector throughout 2014.

According to World Maritime News, Maersk reached the top spot with a capacity increase of 318,000 TEU, which was an increase of 12% on its fleet capacity.

Growth was mainly down to the group’s delivery of nine Triple-E ships, each of 18,340 TEU.

In second place was the world’s third largest liner CMA CGM, who reported its fleet growth as 9%, as it made a 139,000-TEU increase.

MSC increased its operating capacity by 168,000 TEU, a 7% rise from 2013.

The company, based in Geneve, has plans lined up to add 30 new vessels to its fleet which will total more than 350,000 TEU.

Maersk is currently the largest shipping line in the world with a total TEU capacity of 2.8 million, followed by MSC with 2.3 million and CMA CGM with 1.6 million TEU
